What is ERP? Definitions and advantages

The word ERP stands for “Enterprise Resource Planning”, which can be translated as corporate resource planning. An ERP software system can be used to automatically plan and control workflows and processes in companies. ERP software therefore helps companies to make the most efficient use of their resources: Human resources, procurement, operating resources, finance, production, logistics and many more.

You have certainly already had many points of contact with ERP systems – sometimes even without actively realizing it. Imagine you order something from a company’s online store. As soon as you have placed the order, you automatically receive an invoice. The manufacturer and the parcel company are also automatically notified of your order. In the store itself, you are created as a new customer and the stock is updated. There are also many other processes that are triggered. Accordingly, daily business activities are managed by an ERP system in which the software system digitally combines business processes and links them together in a central database.
